Try It Out restaurant

Location

With two spots in South Auckland, Try It Out might not be the most convenient choice for university students without a car. However, for locals in the area, these restaurants are a beloved destination, known for their steaming bowls of flavorful beefy soups.

Cafe Overview

Try It Out showcases essential elements of Vietnamese cuisine: rice, noodles, and fresh herbs. Vietnamese dishes vary by region, whether you have it with or without soup,  these core components are always present. Familiar daily dishes are brought straight from Vietnam into the Try It Out menu. Represent some classic Vietnamese dishes, the beef tendon Pho, steamed rice roll and prawn pancake but the desserts offer an authentic taste that’s surprisingly hard to find outside Vietnam.

Specialties

Try It Out’s menu is perfect for sharing with family or friends, offering a variety of dishes that are ideal for a communal dining experience. I lowkey just want to order a bunch and then try a little bit of each like a buffet. You can’t go wrong with Bun Cha, Spring Rolls, or Banh Mi, but my top picks include the Special Pho with assorted beef cuts, a poached egg, and fried bread sticks available only on weekends (if you know, you know). Don’t miss out on the Vietnamese iced coffee—I know many great places serve Vietnamese coffee in Auckland, but the CRUSHED ICE, is so simple yet so satisfying. Vietnamese coffee is always best with crushed ice, trust me on that.

Atmosphere

The restaurant boasts a straightforward decor with Vietnamese-themed artwork on the walls. What stands out is the ample comfortable seating, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. A fun touch is their delivery robot, which helps the staff and is a hit with kids. Though the decor might not be as modern as some newer places, Try It Out’s long-standing reputation and loyal customer base speak volumes about its quality and charm. If you're seeking luxury and sophistication, this might not be the spot for you. Try It Out embodies a warm, family-friendly atmosphere perfect for cosy gatherings. It's a place where families frequently dine, the staff are well-known and friendly, and hardworking locals come for a hearty meal and a well-deserved break.

Customer Experience

During my visits, lunchtime was relatively calm at first and became busier later, so I didn’t have to wait long for a table. The Otahuhu location, however, tends to be quite crowded. The staff are friendly and provide excellent food recommendations, ensuring you get everything you ordered.

In summary, Try It Out is a great spot for those willing to venture outside central Auckland for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. If you’re up for a road trip and craving Vietnamese desserts or a full meal, it’s definitely worth a visit. I look forward to returning and trying more dishes from their menu. Share your thoughts if you’ve visited both Try It Out locations!
